A flat nappy are the ones your mum used on you. Flat white squares of material, often with one or two thin pink stripes down the sides. Exactly what most people think of when you say cloth nappies.

Now, for prefolds, I'm going to refer you to http://www.snazzipants.co.nz and look up products and then prefolds. It'll show you diagrams, pictures, and how to use them.

Hope that helps.

Flats are the old fashioned cloth nappies with the pink stripes on the sides.
- can be used as pocket stuffers, pinless fold or most people use them as burp cloths, to line the change table etc etc

Prefolds - have already been layered in a way that puts more thickness in the middle, so they are more absorbent and smaller
- can be snappied or used tri-folded in a wrap.
see www.snazzipants.co.nz for photos etc.

Prefolds are definitely worth having a few - come in sets of 6 I think.
Can get coloured ones too - or dye your own using dye from www.greenbeans.co.nz

Hope this helps

Next time you're round I'll show you mine. I use Towelling flats mostly. But I have prefolds too. I also have a stash of newborn ones now too... just waiting for a new bum!!
