OK, this has been annoying me all day.

Are older parents not welcome at this?

(Just had to ask, I find this groups title extremely discrimatory, I know Im pregnant and perhaps overly sensitive, and I see support people are welcome as well but come on, older people breastfeed too!!!!!)

I had exactly the same reaction when I read this post. What age is young, and at what age are you considered old? If you are in the older age bracket, are we excluded? (Not that I live in Auckland, but just interested).

I remember a discussion on this already, I think it was funded for under 25 year olds. Here is it - http://www.thenappynetwork.org.nz/forum ... breastfeed

I think it's great, it is quite daunting going to things when you are always younger than everyone (I can't wait to finally turn 30 )
Have fun ladies!

The group is only funded for under 25's.

Over 25's may find it easier to attend other support groups such as LLL.This group's focus is mainly on supporting teen and young parents up to 25 with breastfeeding.
I am a founding member of the one in Chch and its a real support for young parents with breastfeeding as its basis but also spreads out with info on co-sleeping,baby massage, contraception choices etc.
Its also really good socially for the young mums to be able to relate to other young mums who may face/have faced the same issues.

As a younger slightly crunchy mum myself, I can see why it's only for younger mums, it is very very hard to find other mums your age who are interested in remotely the same things, and you can feel really out of place at regular groups, where almost everyone else is much older than you. :twitch: As well as the funding issues too - a lot of sexual health programs, antenatal groups, etc are free for under 25's but not others, it's pretty common. Especially for the younger teenage mums... I know from experience that going through a planned and much wanted pregnancy is VERY different to going through an unplanned pregnancy as a teenager that you only found out 1/4 the way along, and have no idea what to do with a baby as none of your friends have kids, and just want to go clubbing  . It's very isolating.

Most parents groups are aimed towards and largely attended by mums who are in their late 20's & 30's, and if you want to set up an older mum's group, what's stopping you? 8-) The idea would be pretty cool, though public funding wouldn't be an option.

I'm an old mum apparently, but I can definitely see the need to have something for young parents. I find the younger mums are often under represented at a lot of the parents activities around about here and I'm betting a lot of them simply aren't comfortable.

I don't see an issue with it and think it's important that they can get support from peers of a similar age.

See i dont see there being any such thing as "old mums" but like others have said there definately are "young mums" and there is alot fo stigma that comes with that. I think groups dedicated to this group are wonderful :vibes:

when i originally enquired about the age limit it was simply because i wanted to attend a breastfeeding support group while breastfeeding and this one is close enough that i could attend, i don't know about any other support groups nearby.
I've been a young mum and i know how it feels when everyone around you is older etc, most people that see me out and about with the baby think that this is my 1st child and they all seem quite surprised if i mention my daughter in year 2 already.

Same here but I've usually got the younger 2 with me and sometimes I feel embarrassed mentioning my eldest  which I shouldn't need to, but I still get all sorts of comments which can hurt sometimes! So I agree that it is a great idea to have a group for younger mums - esp a breastfeeding one, as quite often young mums can get pushed to formula if they don't have enough support to BF.

Yup, but I'm a lot older than the young mums and I know as a 20 year old I wouldn't have felt as comfortable hanging out with someone my age.

Know that feeling. :hide: I still get the assumption that #3 is my first, on the odd occasion I'm out without the others. And yep, feel pretty  to share that I have a 5 year old sometimes. No matter how things are now, having a baby at 17 is hardly something to be proud of.

Interesting discussion. See I feel that older mums are not represented that well. Plus we often have quite established careers, social networks etc and having a baby can make you the odd one out. I wouldnt expect a group just for us, i just dont like exclusion of groups of people that is all.
