Market Research - Cloth nappy shop Wellington

Post by nikkitheknitter » Tue Nov 14, 2006 8:06 am

Hiya!

My friend and I are planning to open a shop that primarily sells modern cloth nappies in Wellington (hopefully in Kilbirnie, by the Children's Bookshop).

This is the best way I can think of doing market research! Asking cloth bots!

I'm worried about the feasibility of relying on selling nappies, but figure this is my point of difference from the other baby stores out there (though I know some of them stock a few types of naps). The reason I want a store as opposed to online selling is so that people can come see the nappies for themselves, sizing-wise and different options. And as well, reach those mums out there who aren't internet savvy and haven't yet heard the gospel of modern cloth.

Any ideas on what I should stock? Nappies and otherwise? (Looking at emailing NZ nappy makers today - check your emails  )
I'm looking at getting in little homemade items, my friend makes funky little people hooded sweatshirts and my business partner's partner (ha!) makes wooden mobiles... trying to find someone who does funky knitted stuff too... bit of retro revival :D

As far as promoting business goes (due to the fact that the shop we are looking at doesn't have a street front... relying on the pull of the Children's Bookshop) we are thinking of hosting babyshowers, getting in parenting gurus for workshops etc.

As far as facilities go, we are planning on making it as child friendly as possible. Door that buggies can fit through, baby gate on door, child area, bathrooms, breastfeeding chairs, etc. (How are we going to fit this all in?!?!)

Whaddaya think?

One thing I'd recommend is a baby change area - it always amazes me that no baby store has the facility for you to change your baby! I remember using the back room in the Baby City store in Porirua to change Sasha once because there were no facilities around!

Great!! I live just a street over from that book shop and would LOVE a baby shop with MCN and homemade products. Exciting!!! I hope you get the support and go through with it.
Also good location as there are a few free carparks outside.....

Good luck :D

What to stock?
- Fuzzi Bunz
- Snazzipants
- Cheek Boutique
- Designer Bums
- aww heck! all the nappies that are currently only available online!

Plus
- Wipes (DandelioNZ?)
- Mama Cloth (Outrageous?)
- Ecostore (?) products
- Mooncups
- Shewees
8)

Great idea! You'd certainly attract a lot of TNN'ers!

edited to add... even if you just had a few sample colours and sizes of each nappy and then did orders for what people want? Otherwise you'd have to have a whole lot of stock to keep everything in store! 8)

That sounds great!

A watercooler is a really good idea!

What about a stash of cute dolls nappies and baby dolls for the little ones to play with in the play area? Maybe you could sell a range of dolls nappies and slings etc?

I like the idea of knitted covers.

Hmm, nappies to stock - I don't know, just a big range!!

Edited to add - all the things Blossom said!!!

Ooooo getting very excited now! Thanks for all your suggestions!

Yep, we are going to try and do an environmental spin... but try not to scare off those afraid to be green.

Must go email the nappy makers while I am feeling so enthused :D

A buggy parking area and kids play area, so you can park up the buggy, pop the kids in the play area and shop :)

Aisles wide enough for a buggy too.
Lisa, mama to Maya, no more nappies here!

Fantastic idea! I definately second the baby change area! My car is not the most convenient place to change and I end up there so often!

Great spot too!

I think you should have as many different types as possible, perhaps set something up with NZ WAHMs so you can at least have samples of their nappies, even if customers still have to order nappies, ie if you can't have a full range available to purchase on the spot people still get to see the nappies IRL.

Just be careful with this. I know the lady at Mini Me in Petone said she has heaps of people check out the nappies in her shop and then buy online. She's supposed to get commission for this (but never has) but unless people say when they are ordering the online shops would never know.
