silhouette machine owners...

Post by Claire » Fri Aug 16, 2013 10:09 am

Thought some of you might be interested... I got sick of how expensive the silhouette blades are I go through one ever couple of weeks so at $20 + post each it's really ridiculous... but then If found out you can actually get other blade holders and massively reduce the price.!!
There are a few different ones that work with silhouette but after a bit of reading I decided on this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Graphtec-plotte ... OU:US:3160
$25US including 3 graphtec blades and free shipping to nz. Extra blades then only cost $2.80 each (also free shipping).
Just a bit cheaper eh! I haven't got it yet but I have heard that they work fine.

And mats! The silhouette ones are $26 each but I've found you can use the thin chopping boards $2 for 2 at the $2 shop  Just transfer the grid with a vivid, make sticky (with something like aleene's tack it over and over or 3m spray) and then tape the sides off with masking tape. Works fab!

I'm pretty pleased with how much cheaper it is .. thought you guys might be interested too :D

Nice! I've just purchased a silhouette and it arrives next week. Can you tell me how long a blade usually lasts?

totally depends on what you use it for. It can cut vinyl for ages without getting blunt but thicker card blunts it much quicker. My first blades lasted nearly a year but now I use the machine most days and go through a heap of them.

I'm planning to do a reasonable amount of paper cutting, so I'll probably chew through the blades then. I purchased a couple of spares, including one specifically for fabric.

The fabric blades are exactly the same but with the blue colour blade holder. Supposedly they are better because you can take it out of the blade holder for cleaning.. but that often breaks the blade holder so I don't recommend it

Thanks for that tip. :-) Yes, I was aware they were the same, but just a different colour to identify them. Didn't know about the cleaning thing though, and really don't want to break it. It was meant to arrive this week, but I was doing a consolidated shipment from the US and one supplier mucked around a bit so it missed the boat.
