Interior decorating...any experts?

Postby jailee » Wed Apr 25, 2012 9:23 pm

I am so indecisive = this is a problem when trying to choose colours....
We're doing up a bedroom (possibly more than one) for DD at the moment, but as we tend to change things around periodically, it may not always be her room, DS might end up there at some point. So I need a neutral colour that I can change to suit either gender with curtains etc. If I like it we might end up using it through the rest of the house too. I'd also love to do our room and have already got curtain fabric which is a blue/grey colour.
I'm not overly fond of the yellowy creams, like spanish white. The room has wooden window frames and around the wardrobe and also the doors, with polished floors, so it's pretty 'brown' in there. DD loves anything pink, so I'm imagining that any accessories will be very pink themed.
Any helpful advice? Any particular colours that people have tried and love?
Thanks so much :)

I love decorating kids rooms - Let me do it please!!!!!
In our last place in Rangiora we did a neutral colour paint job and then decorated using Wallies wallpaper cutouts - they are awesome as they just go on with water and then when you want to remove them you just wet sponge them off, no ripping of paint etc. They could easily be removed and changed quickly and cheaply.

This time we have done the same - but with a feature wall as well. My kids have always had a theme- which I find makes it easier to make the room feel like it's all pulling together nicely. I'll go and take some pics of the boys new rooms. They are not completely finished yet - but you will get the idea.

On the colour note - this time we used a colour called green smoke by resene - which i think would be awesome for a boy or girl - looks great in Jack's room but would look awesome with pink or purple too. we also used 1/2 napa with the green smoke

soft green is a great colour for a feature wall in girl or boys room. dd and ds are currently sharing a room and i have it on one of their walls and a soft purple on the other three (as it was orginally my artroom). the green goes great with purples or pinks/butterflies and tinkerbell etc and also with blues and reds/cowboys, pirates, trucks etc. also orange. id go with a feature wall - i love feature walls! other colour option tea or even a few shades darker if the room is quite light.

My boys have 3 walls of a buttermilk colour and one of a dark greyed blue which works well. Also Robins Egg Blue (Resene) would be a good gender neutral colour which looks fantastic with natural wood; we've got it in our bathroom and it's stunning with the Rimu in there.

I'm with you on not liking yellowy creams. Our house is in Ecru, can't remember who by but not Resene, whoever Colourplus stock. Its a nice not yellowy cream, probably similar to the tea colours suggested. My kids rooms are all just neutral with the colours in the duvets and decorations and I reckon they look good :D

I love duck egg blue it can be a boy colour but I have also seen it look lovely in a girls nursery. It was a resene Karen Walker paint but I'm not sure of the exact name. A light blue with I suppose purple grey tones which warm it up rather than an icy blue.

I just found out it was Robins egg blue, looks more greeny than I remembered but once they are on the wall can look so different.

Yeah I quite like the robins egg blue, always have.... and the green looks nice too, love the pics, thanks macca :)
Have decided we're going to stick with neutral. It's quite a dark room on the south side of the house so it really needs a lighten up. We're going to go with quarter tea :D thanks for your help!!

Yes, neutral walls are best, then you can do whatever you like with curtains, bedding etc :) its also great if you need/want to change rooms around!

Marton is our fav paint colour :) similar to Tea. our entire house is pained in Marton ;)

We've gone for triple spanish white in the bedrooms/dining/lounge, and only double spanish white in the darker hallway and it actually matches pretty well. We think it looks lovely with all the wood and there's lots of it. We also have a lovely poo-hiding :yuck: 1970s print beautiful quality carpet (though less than 10 years old so it would be so wrong to replace it just because I don't like the look of it) with creams & browns through the lounge/hall (and dining before we pulled it up to have the floorboards sanded - we'll eventually lay that "dining" piece in one of the bedrooms), so that limited the colour of "neutral" that we felt happy with. We wanted something that was warm "feeling" and we certainly think the place does feel warm.

Here's our room after we painted it (very white ceiling)

(Ugly, thick velvet drapes, but ugly rules when I need complete block-out during a migraine. I can't beat how good these drapes are for performance. So, they will do!)

In the boys' room, again triple spanish white
