Yarn Dyers and those who buy bulk yarn in here please.......

Post by white-rose » Wed May 15, 2013 2:35 pm

For those of you who buy your yarn in bulk for dying can you please tell me where you get it - shop/online/mill etc.

We have been asked to purchase yarn through a fundraising group I am part of for a group of older ladies who knit for the new babies at the local maternity unit.

They are currently purchasing the yarn through a NI mill (not sure where) at approx $10 for 100g ball of 3ply 100% merino baby wool.

i just want to do some looking around and see if I can find it cheaper or get a better deal (this might be a great deal I dont know?)

PM is fine if you would prefer not to reveal your sources in here! :D

It's probably Design Spun (Skeinz), there are few mills operating in NZ now. Raw prices especially merino are getting more and more expensive too so they're actually getting a fairly decent price IMO.

they dont seem to have a 3ply option - I think it might be the wool company utiku, from my googling. So if anyone knows where I can get approx 3kg in three different colours (white, pink blue) three times a year at less than $10/100g I would be very grateful. :D

Have you looked at Bendigo Woollen Mills? Luxury is AUS$13.64 for a 200gram ball, looks like they only have white and cream in 3ply now, but heaps of colours in 4ply

It might be worth emailing Skeinz to ask if they can do a bulk deal. They do do 3ply.

Is the Milton Mill still open? I was given some yummy merino baby yarn hand dyed in a yarn dye swap (I think from Angie). It is divine. I think it was 8 ply though, but I'm sure their price list had a baby yarn - may have been fingering/4 ply (and I've bought other 4 ply yarn from there before). They seemed to always have odd weight yarns there - may be worth checking as they may have a 3 ply there?
