hemp yarn

hemp yarn

Postby anotherhopeful » Fri Oct 28, 2011 1:54 pm

Just stumbled across hemp yarn and wondered what it was like to knit and how it looks once knitted? Is it like cotton?

I've not used it, but I do have some here. It's more like linen than cotton. Very strong and softens with wear. I suspect it'll be a bit hard on the hands to knit, but I'll cope with that when I get the chance to knit it up. Nettle on the other hand is horribly strong and scratchy; that might get to be dishcloths I think.l

My friend has some, it's like flax, feels awful. She was contemplating washing it before knitting.

Yeah, I have some here, it feels very much like string. I bought it four years ago to make a market bag - I'll get there eventually!

That's good to know. Would the wool/hemp mix be softer then? They write it's very soft?

If it's mixed with wool it might knit up more like wool than like cotton? What percentage hemp is it? Mine is 100% hemp so probably incomparable.

If it's blended with wool, they may have processed it differently to make it soft as I otherwise can't see how they're ply or blend it with wool as it's so stiff.

I dunno, mum crocheted a few hats out of hemp twine, would have had to go slowly or risk really hurting your fingers, and woudln't knit well. Makes a great hat though.
