What to do when the button doesn't fit through the hole!

Post by jailee » Tue May 29, 2012 8:58 pm

Gah....I bought a (very expensive I thought) button for a top I knitted for myself....never even entered my head to check the size of the buttonhole  Anyhow, there is no way my button will fit, it is too big!
There's nothing I can do, right? Except buy a smaller button....
(I'm just glad I didn't go buy 5 of them! cos the top does have 5 buttonholes, but decided to just put one at the top...)

Yah there's no way I'm froggin any part of this one!! It has taken me so long already ! In fact I have a feeling the button band wasn't done separately anyway, so that's not an option. Ah, button shopping again....Not my favourite thing....

Could you sew the button hole closed and then sew the button on and crochet a loop of yarn for the other side to do it up like that? Or buy a dome and sew the button on with the dome on the underside so the button is non-functional?

Is it just not fitting? Cause I've been amazed at what sized buttons I can eventually fit thru. The bottom holes do stretch. It's just getting the buttons thru the first time.

Well thank you Razz  wonder of wonders, it IS amazing how much that hole stretched! I wouldn't have believed it. It's a very tight fit, but I don't imagine I'm going to be taking it in and out of the hole much - once its all sewn on I will probably leave it done up.
Yay!!!! \:D/ :happyrun:
So my next question is - what is the best way to sew a button on? (dumb question but I've only done it once before and wasn't that happy last time)

:rotfl: As i was reading down I wsa going to say stretch it. And as for sewing them on I get MIL to do it and she says use wool as cotton will cut the wool over time. I watched her with my last lot of buttons and she would split the wool (if it was stranded) and just use 1 or two pieces and just sewed it on like it was on material.
