Calling knitters who know stuff

Post by Janie » Tue May 29, 2012 10:12 pm

:help: :knit:

I am so not a knitter, but I would like to buy a gift for a friend who is knitting as a distraction from her health concerns.

Where could I buy decent lovely yarn for a hat or for socks in scrummy colours? What sort of wool should I look for, how much would I need to be enough to knit something? Where would you point someone who doesn't know a thing about what to look for? I like the look of the stitch markers some of you make, where could I get me some of those for her?

Thanks

So many lovely TNNers make gorgeous hand dyed yarn, just stunning, there's Hannah (redhead) Rachel (rootoo) Emma (emmapea) Margo (kiwiwonder) Jo (missymoomoo but have a feeling she's changed her username like on Rav but could be wrong - on mobile so can't check at the mo) they all have Facebook pages if you are on fb I can give you their links, or pm them and I'm sure they can send you photos. Seriously beautifully dyed yarn!!

As for amount, it varies, 100g of 4ply or 200g of 8 or 10ply would be a good weight IMO.

Stitchmarkers, heaps of us make them ;) as well as some of the WAHMs listed above :)

Hope that helps a little!!

ETA: I use knitting for my health too. It's really therapeutic. Helps me with a lot of my brain stuff. :)

Agree with above, if you want yarn for socks, 100grams is plenty for a pair.

If I was looking for a quick but special purchaise online I would look at

Socks (need aprox 100g)
www.vintagepurls.co.nz for sock wool (they stock on Fridays and are in hot demand!)
www.knitsch.co.nz for their sock yarn

Hat or Gloves (need aprox 100g)
Malbrigo from Little Country wools - http://www.littlecountrywools.com/malabrigo/
(maybe look at the silky, rios, or worsted)

Of course the lovely crafty ladies with their facebook shops as listed by Carla...
