How much yarn?

Post by Vivianne » Mon Jun 25, 2012 9:48 am

I need to buy some yarn, a friend is going to knit me a Central Park Hoodie (in exchange for quilt making). I was thinking of using TWC yarn. Is it soft enough? How much yarn will I need? I wear a size 16 - 18 top and would like it hip length rather than waist length.

Here is a link to the pattern... http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library ... ark-hoodie

The yarn used is 10ply, so TWC would be too thin. Another nice (heaps softer), and still economical yarn is Luxury 10ply from Bendigo Woollen Mills, http://www.bendigowoollenmills.com.au/p ... php?cat=46 (note that only some colours come in 10ply.) It also looks like others have knit it in a Rustic 12ply too http://www.bendigowoollenmills.com.au/p ... .php?cat=8

The pattern sizes are worked from a bust measurement.

I would be a bit careful with the luxury for an adult garment, it pills pretty badly and I have heard that it doesn't hold it's shape very well either. Cascade might be another option for 10ply available from Holland Road Yarn, I think they have it on their website as well.

Thanks for the links Rachael - I'm a bit dense at reading knitting patterns. Does that mean for a 44inch bust I need 9 skeins of yarn? Can I download this withou having a Rav account? I know ther person knitting it for me has a Rav account though (after I pointed her there  ).

Alison - thanks for the yarn reccommendation. Ouch ! If I need 9 skeins it's going to cost me $135 in yarn  I know it's probably worth it, but holey moley!

Loyal is around $6 per 50gm skein I think and is 10ply, maybe not a really varied range of colours though

Yes I am fairly sure you can download it without being a member. But there is no point you both buying the pattern.

If you were using the yarn specified it would take 9 balls, but those balls are only 183y/167m each. If you used BWM wool for example, Luxury 10ply is 300m per ball and rustic 12ply is 270m per ball, so you would need just a smidge over 5 balls of luxury or 5.5 balls of rustic.

Cascade 220 has 220yards per skein, so you would need 7.5.

Of course this is if you knit to the pattern and didn't make it longer.
