grad dyeing - wicking of thread

Post by ob1 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 7:12 pm

Hi, if I make an item, with topstitching, and want to do a grad dye, then the dye will preferentially travel up the cotton thread if I use cotton thread, and not look any good, and won't take if I use polyester thread, meaning my thread won't match. So what do you do? I could dye the material before I make the item, but then again I have the problem of my thread not matching all of the gradient dye job. In which case I'd probably rather make the item first and then dye it as the polyester thread would take a little of the colour at least. Is there an answer that someone can share? TIA.
