How to fix a sunhat?

Post by Resse » Thu Nov 10, 2011 2:26 pm

DD has a sunhat that was given to us. It looks homemade.

Anyway, the brim is fairly wide, and the fabric has not been stiffened in any way. It is starting to be annoying that the brim keeps falling over her eyes all the time!!

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could fix it so the brim stays up?

I had thought of maybe cutting it off, and ironing some interfacing on the inside, and then maybe stitching around the brim. Not sure if that will work?

Any ideas appreciated!

Minty did a tutorial for adding some wire around the brim to help them stay up, will see if I can find it.

ETA, here it is... http://buttonsbybenji.blogspot.com/2010 ... orial.html hopefully you would just be able to thread the wire in without too many hassles.

If it's not going to be washed too often you could try some spray on starch and iron it - or rather than unpicking the brim you could get some heavy interfacing, and make a fabric brim and sew it onto the existing brim (so you'd only need to do the underside - just fold the hems under the interfacing and stitch along the existing stitch lines)

Alex has a hat from a swap box made like this, and it works great. It did end up kinked out of shape while in storage over winter, but I managed to get it out. :)
