Argh popped stitches on hems

Post by inkypinkyponky » Mon May 21, 2012 7:49 pm

So annoying - all the tops I make for DD end up with the stitches on the hem popping when they are stretched (ie when I'm trying to put them on her and she's struggling and crawling away... ) Any tips or tricks from you expert sewers out there? I don't have an overlocker or coverstitch machine (much as I would love them), just the plain old sewing machine.

are you using a double needle? That gives a nice stretchy seam.

I've tried a twin needle but can't seem to get the tension right, the bobbin tension seems to be far too tight no matter how far I adjust the tension dial. That and I'm too lazy to change the needle and rethread the machine  I might give that another go though, I'd forgotten about twin needles. I've borrowed a friend's overlocker for the week and it's loooovely! And so fast. Will have to do a bulk lot of sewing...
