You can handwash batting before using, but it's not necessary, shirnkage is only between 1 and 3 percent. I think with cotton you can quilt about 6 inches apart (but you might want to check that).

On the receipt it says it's Premium seed cotton wadding natural - does that tell me anything? Google isn't overly helpful. I'm wanting to quilt about 8" in distance (Either side of the ditch)

I have a top 1 tip after doing one quilt - get Viv to sew it for you!!!!
Seriously takes more patience than I have, I have every admiration for anyone one quilts, it's not 'instant' enough and requires too much precision for me!

I guess the answer after looking at that link is yes, you can do about 8 inches apart, but bear this in mind

P.S. While batting manufacturers recommend quilting distances of up to 8" to 10", if your quilt will be washed or heavily used, do consider adding more quilting stitches than that. The closer the quilting lines are to each other, the less stress there is on each individual stitch. Your quilting will last longer as a result.

All finished!! I realized I really don't have much patience for the actual quilting and get frustrated very quickly - even just doing straight lines! I even think I managed to somehow break my walking foot doing the binding. First time every making binding and sewing it on 'nicely' and it was actually quite fun.

I felt really smart when I found an online calculator to work out how much material I needed for the binding too.

Onto babys cot quilt now, I know what fabric range I really want to use but just got to try and think of a pattern that is simple enough but shows the fabric well as well.
