HELP!!! My overlocker is not overlocking!!...

Post by Resse » Mon Nov 12, 2012 7:59 pm

I am meant to be sewing 20 pairs of pants for the school production - a fairly simple, easy task if only I had the use of my overlocker!
For some reason (now that it matters), it just will not do what I want.

To begin with, one of the threads keep breaking, and now, after several re threads of the whole thing (and cleaning etc..), it appears that all the threads are still intact, but when I feed the fabric through, it is only cutting, and no threads are even making it onto the fabric. I just don't get it - I don't see how this is going wrong.

I am starting to get a bit stressed about this now - I have been trying to sort this since 7:15pm tonight - and am expected to front up with these pants tomorrow (not all 20, but at least some).

Oh, and then to add to it all - out of frustration I moved to my sewing machine, and then the fabric got pulled into the feed dogs

Have you googled "trouble shooting" and the model of over locker you have?

I feel your pain, can you sew a thinner piece of fabric? perhaps the tension has been altered (by little fingers) without you realising?

I have tried all fabrics - cotton, stretch, cord, thicker, thinner etc... (the pants fabric are stretch).
It won't work on anything.

If you have the manual somewhere, it may have a trouble shooting page.
Although in my experience, it never lists the problem I have

I've given up on mine for the moment as it drives me nuts.
Hope you can figure what is wrong with yours!

Have you any spare needles to replace the ones in it with?
Are all the threads the same?
Are any of the random buttons on by mistake, like rolled hem or r-l switch?

No I have no spare needles... I think all the threads are the same. (they are on the same spool thingies, and the same brand).
My overlocker is as ancient as the hills - I'm not sure if it has any buttons that can be fiddled with. I don't even think it does rolled hem...

That would be great - but I am very nervous about that breaking too!

I would re-thread from scratch. Cut all threads, pull out the old ones and make sure all lint is removed especially around the tension discs. Re-thread from right to left. If something is broken you should spot it when re-threading. Adjust the tension discs to loosen & gradually tighten to neaten stitches.

My bet is that one of the threads isn't through one of the loops it is supposed to be through, so it's not forming stitches. If you can't spot it - re-thread.

Good luck!

THank you Leanne - I am going to try that again. I have rethreaded it about 5 times yesterday, and each time it seems to go through all the correct loops and things. It is just as if there is not tension or anything pulling on the threads. . They are not coming together to make the overlocking stitch. They just lie there behind the foot, doing nothing and all separate. But the foot still moves the fabric through, and it still cuts.
My mind is sort of fresh this morning after a very late night (or early morning  ), so may see some potential problems a bit better.

Just a question about the tension dials - which one is loose? 1 or 5?

Is the thread in the tension discs properly? Other than rethreading it, which you've done, I don't have much help for you sorry.

ETA you could always threaten to throw it out
