What am i doing wrong?

Post by anotherhopeful » Fri Sep 10, 2010 11:13 pm

I just tried to snap a bib with my press for the first time and both seemed to go on fine but then wouldnt snap together. Upon inspection i've noticed that the "sticks" in the middle haven't been crushed down far enough so they are now touching when you try to do the snaps up. IYKWIM?? i tried to do it again but same thing, so i just ended up giving them both a squash with the snap pliers and now they snap together fine. Do i need to adjust something on the press?

You probably aren't using enough force on the snap press. Grab a spare piece of cloth and experiment. It takes quite a bit of force to get it to attach the snaps properly.

 I remember asking the same question.. I haven't used my press in a while, but there is a screw on the top somewhere that you might have to loosen for the handle to "smoosh" them enough ;)

Yes, agree with the others.
But you have to be a bit careful - if you push too hard, the snap will crack.

I remember when I borrowed Resses snap press for the 1st time, getting So fuming frustrated that I couldnt get it to work properly.
When she showed me it looks so easy and I just couldnt work it out.
It didnt help that just before that I had read a thread that someone had started called ' HELP , MY SNAP PRESS SNAPPED', and I was SO worried i would snap Renates press

You just have to give it a bit more force. My 'snapping arm' has gotten so strong now that I often over compensate now and snap snaps

See the screw thats sticking up, just before the press starts to angle down?
If that is screwed right up, you can press as hard as you like, but it wont snap the snap enough, you need to wind it down a bit until it lets you snap the snap hard enough.

I have taken the screw out completley, and use the hole to screw in and store my other die piece while Im not using it.

I hope that helps a little bit :D

If you're used to snap pliers, yeah it'll definitely be a force issue! I was amazed at how little effort it takes to snap with pliers - not really sure how it takes that much less!

I also find that if there isn't enough material in them, they don't snap for long either iygwim.

took that screw out today and it snapped fine. i really had to swing on it still - will have to get used to that! but still better than the rigmarole of the pliers!

maybe its as the pliers have force coming from both sides where as the press only has pressure from the top down? .... i love my new snap press \:D/
