Miss 5, nearly 6 has a chest measurement of 61cm. She's on the skinny side of 'average' though.

thanks for that rachael. its similar to one i used (measurements just the same)

i just wondered if since they included boys in the average (i assume) (and since my size 5s seem to be on the big size) they would be slightly bigger than just girls.

so just double checking :D

and one funny thing about those charts is that the average chest size for a 24 month old and a 2 year old are about an inch different

Boys shouldn't effect the measurements because they are meant to develop the same till 8yrs old

Z is 5yrs10mths and 54cm

It seams there is quite a range of 'normal'.

If you have the actual chest measurements that the pattern is designed to fit as well as the ages, and ask the knitter to choose the appropriate size based on measurement not age - a bit like what Tikki does in her patterns.
