Wee Weka Patterns - feedback?

I want to start my fistula nappy, but it needs to be a large, so help appreciated

Crikey, I've missed this thread for a while. Sorry - didn't see questions above about elastic tightness before.

Sorry Nic, no size L uploaded (except for the M/L side snap which I would describe as being the rise of an M, but has the wingspan of a L). I have made a L front fastening pocket AIO for Emily for nights - will you be at the Nappiccino on Monday? I can give you a tracing then. Or you can upsize the M pattern to a size L?

I'm not sure about Monday so maybe I'll just have a go at upsizing the medium. I'll increase the rise the most, and the legs just a little bit and see how that goes

I made the S/M wee-weka pocket nappy with gussets. Your instructions were great Leanne, but I've just looked at the new improved instructions (in pdf format) and they're even better!

In 'Step 8: Final step!' you mention the stretching around the legs ("stretched the FOE as far as it would go to gather at the legs"), but not at the back of the nappy (it tells you on the instructions that come with the pattern but I didn't follow these). On my first attempt I missed this bit and it just didn't seem right. I took my attempt to the next nappy network meeting and my error was pointed out...then I went back and checked the shortened instructions and yes, found it did say to stretch at the back. Anyway, after I'd sewn all my pockets (all 20 of them!) I unpicked the back, stretched and resewed on the FOE, using the cool joining technique I'd just found out about on the forum (http://www.chloetoesboutique.com/store/WsPages.asp?ID=2, wish I'd known this sooner when I was sewing my other 19 pockets: I think it gives a nicer finish). Maybe you could also include a link to this if people want to try this second approach?

I also made 16 of the Wee Weka S-M-L Fitted Nappies and used the instructions from http://www.thenappynetwork.org.nz/fitted.php.

I just used the amounts of elastic for estimates when ordering, then stretched (almost) as much as the lastin would go, and found, since I was using the super-stretchy lastin, that I've got quite a bit of lastin left over...which is a good thing (better too much than not enough), although I was a little worried that perhaps I'd stretched it too much.

The only major error I made on my first nappy was on step 6 "Straight stitch over sew around the whole of the nappy.", I think I used too small a stitch and found I lost a lot of the stretch at the legs and back. Again I took my first attempt to the next meeting and got some good advice: either use a much longer stitch or sew in and around the elastic, rather than through it. I did the latter and was more than happy with the result.

I thought the 3rd piece was optional! So I guess its all part of the pattern then, been a while since someone last posted.

on retrospect, i think i'd prefer to use braided elastic: the lastin tends to leave marks on my baby's legs (sometimes) and i've heard that braided elastic is a little gentler.... or maybe i just shouldn't have stretched the lastin so much?

First of all I love the side snap pattern! But I think the size is misleading... I made the S/M for my 9kg 72cm daughter and it's SO small, it probably would have fit her at 2-4 months (made up as a fitted with a decent sized soaker). I don't know if it would be a better fit as a cover but I just added some inches all around (to give it the dimensions of other diapers she has) and it fits. I would call it a S, maybe drop the S/M. Even if it means S rise, M width, it's much more confusing (I think) to have the M on there.

Otherwise, I love the pattern!

Just thought I would add my two cents:

I made 18 wee weka pocket naps for my bub last year and they have been fantastic! He has fit them from NB (4 kg) until now (11 months and +10 kg) which I am really impressed with. I am starting to make up 12 in a larger size now with a slightly altered larger wee weka pattern. The changes I am making this time are: 10 mm lastin instead of 6 mm (the 6 mm has started to wear out and has had to be replaced in a few of them recently), and snaps instead of velcro (so busy fingers can't open the nappy). I found the patterns really easy to follow and I think you have done a great job Leanne!
