Would you rather a pattern

Would you rather a pattern

Postby Darny » Wed Mar 09, 2011 2:19 pm

Would you rather buy a pattern or a finished garment?
Thinking of things to put in the auction requests for charities etc and wondering if patterns (my own so not a copyright issue) would be better than finished items because I'm a bit time poor right now (mostly due to procrastination and children being demanding than actual commitments  )
If you were looking for something a wee bit different would you pay for a pattern or would you rather buy the finished item?

I'd happily buy the pattern - especially if it came in more than one size.

Oh and I forgot to ask - if a pattern, do you like PDF or hard copy patterns?
I found a GORGEOUS designer from europe who only sells her kids patterns in hard copy, I so would have bought some if they had been PDF, but the cost of postage plus her patterns plus exchange rate made them closer to $50 nz each.....

Pattern. And yes PDF is great. Paying for postage stinks, and so does the waiting

Yup, pdf for sure - I love it when I buy something and can get it NOW (well, once payment gone through or whatever).

I like pdfs for knitting and baby clothing/small things but not childrens or adults clothing. I have a few books that have disks instead of paper patterns and to print out some patterns takes 20-30 pieces of paper
but yeah.. patterns are great :D

Yeah I've got a pattern that would take 20 odd pages to print out... never used it! Funny that...

totally depends on the item involved.

I think in general though if you are doing a charity auction that the finished item will fetch a higher price... but then your donating materials and time where as a PDF of a pattern (if your planning on selling sooner or later) has much less "costs" involved so it's easier to give.

For things like say nappy patterns I think you'd get hte most dosh from the nappy AND pattern as a bundle. so people can try before they invest in making it (and know what size or mods they'll incorporate)

If it's gendered though you minimise your "market"
