Can I use wooley nylon in regular sewing machine?

Postby Minty » Mon Apr 18, 2011 11:08 am

I want to make DH a merino long-sleeve top with the thumb loops and hand cover bits ('cause he suffers dreadfully from the cold, poor lad), and I want to know if I can use wooley nylon in my normal sewing machine. I was planning to attach the hand cover bit to the sleeve with the overlocker (just like the top I'm wearing right now), but then there is a nice neat, straight topstitch (looks like regular straight stitch, but is stretchy, I guess it is the sort of thing you can do on a CoverPro).

So, how do I do the top stitch? Wooley nylon or something else? It needs to be able to stretch reasonably well to fit over his hands when putting it on, but then shrink back in nice and tight for best warmth.

TIA :)

Oh BTW, my google searches tell me:

You can use it in the bobbin only

or

You can't use it at all 'cause it just gets in a big mess

Hence why I would love to hear from 'a real person' who has done it successfully.

I wouldn't thread it through the needle, I think it would shear in the eye with the tension (if you could thread it through)

Do you want me to visit with my Coverpro?

Mmmmm, now you're tempting me. :D Maybe I should cut out a bunch of things (I have a lot of merino, and a lot of plans :rotfl: ) and then do it all at once (I'm not too bothered about thread colour, can do 'em all the same). Problem is, I don't really know what I should sew and what I should leave for the Coverpro. Might be a two stage process...

I'll give you a ring, as I have been meaning to do that anyway, but need to take DH to doctor first...
