Snap help!!!

Snap help!!!

Postby littlemissella » Thu May 05, 2011 12:38 am

I have just snapped my nappy but the snaps won't click in. It's like the wee pointy bit hasn't been squashed enough. Is there any way I can fix it without having to remove them? I am snapping through microfleece, PUL and cotton. It was originally two layers of microfleece but it was too thick and wouldn't snap.

Just put it back in the press and push a bit harder

Are you using the snap press on the floor or on a table? I've found it works best on the floor as I can use my weight to full advantage.

I found with some snaps (in a size 16 I think) that I didn't have enough layers of fabric and there was too much extra prong left over so when I tried pushing the snap halves together the two sets of bobbly bits matched up before the snaps did.
When you say microfleece, pul and cotton how many cotton layers are there? is it cotton velour? If it's just one layer of each then It sounds like the same issue I had.

I fixed the one that I'd already done by grinding off a bit of the bobbly bit but after that I pushed it through the fabric then trimmed off a bit of the prong before snapping it.

Just reread again and you say an extra layer of microfleece made it too thick. Maybe not the same issue then?

Did you fix it in the end? I was wondering what size snaps you were using as I just use the standard size 20's and last week snapped through a nappy that was Pul, Microfleece and TWO layers of minky and it worked fine. I had to push down really hard but it was ok. I was worried that it would be too thick.

I've read also that some people also stab through where you want the snap with an awl first to make a hole, then put the snap pieces together and press (as if you were using the snap pliers). Fortunately i didnt need to bother with that though.

I had a batch of snaps that did the same thing, no matter how hard I pressed they wouldn't squish enough. Eventually fixed it by going to Repco and buying some big washers to put under the die plate at the bottom to raise it up a bit so I could squish it harder. You have to find some that the centre hole is big enough to drop the die plate through. The part number I have (kept it in case I had the same problem again) was 384 and they were $2 each. I think from memory I had to put two of them on at a time to get enough pressure. HTH.
