shars pocket umbillical scoop nappies

kia ora all! i am a newbie so please bare with me
i was thinking of sewing up some nappies for a friend of mine who is expecting...and i was thinking of using the above pattern but adjusting it to a fitted nappy....has anyone used this pattern? how long does it fit for, is it big? i know its newborn but you know what i mean?! is it worth making umbillical scoop nappies at all? thanks for your help much appreciated

I lent them to someone on here, and they fitted to 8lbs - I then unpicked the velcro and adjusted it to be tabs rather than sewn on the wings, so they will fit for longer - the only reason they were too small was the tummy, the rise was fine.

I'll be able to tell you more when my bub finally arrives - 9 days late and still waiting!

I made some modified to a fitted for a friends bub - she was 8 pounds 7 at birth and they only fitted her for about 5 weeks (but she was a chubby bubby!)

I wouldn't expect genuine NB sizes to fit for longer than 8 weeks even on a tiny baby, so getting 5 weeks out of them was really good.
I think most hire kits are 8 weeks hire- because after that babies tend to be able to fit smalls.
Fitteds are generally not too expensive to make, but if you were wanting them to last a long time you might be better off making smalls and hiring a NB kit?

Even if you bub is little you may not want them in newborn size for too long. I am finding now that I have to put Fynn in smalls quite a lot (even though they are still a little baggy) as the prem/newborn sizes just do not have enough fabric in them to be absorbant enough!!!!!

I really liked the fit of these nappies but had to stop using them at about 8 weeks as the rise was too short and he had some serious plumbers crack! Didn't really need the umbilical scoop part as the rise was never that high anyway.

I'd suggest you make a selection of nappies using different patterns then you have some options depending on size and shape of the baby. We have been struggling with skinny legs but thats another story.

oh thanks all i had forgotten i'd sent this out there my step son was a monster baby 10lbs and had lost weight! so i hoping when we go there that our babies won't be that big! thanks for the feed back

We stopped using them when Alex hit almost two weeks old, just because I couldn't stuff them enough, and we were having leaking issues - making the crotch wider might help, he was about 10lbs (or more) when we stopped using them. The rise and fit was fine, and I found the umbilical scoop really useful, as his cord was quite yucky and the nappy didn't keep it damp.

He's now in nappies which are one inch upsized from the NB pattern, and although the fit is good, we may have to upsize again soon as he can pee through these ones too - we don't own a nappy he can't leak out of!

I think maybe that making a good (matching) booster would help with the absorbancy. Also the booster might help with padding it up around the 'skinny' legs. I have yet to try out this theory yet though.

What has every one been using in teh absorbant inner layer?

I am about to make a start on our baby's stash this weekend so any input would be great.

Heather - I made 'prefolds' out of muslin to fit the pockets, and that was about all I could stuff into them, I'd say making the crotch just a wee bit wider and using a more absorbent stuffer would make the world of difference. They worked really well as far as shape and fit etc, I just couldn't get enough absorbancy in them (mind you, Alex is now in mediums, and I stuff them with a pad folded towelling nappy or a prefold and a microfibre flat tri folded, and for nights I add in a hemp flat - he's a heavy wetter)
I don't have any luck with hemp unless it's with lots of cotton fabric - so I'm assuming it simply absorbs too slowly for him, and based on that I would only use a small amount of hemp teamed with cotton or microfibre to make NB stuffers with.
