Does Spotlight carry chalboard fabric & vinyl?

I was looking through the Spotty competitions entries (kudos to those of you who entered) and saw the chalkboard mat one. I'm feeling somewhat inspired and think it would be perfect for DS2 & my nephew. Then I googled for tutes to see if there was anything special about making one, and ran across a dual "white board" (vinyl) and chalkboard mat. Where can I get both of these fabrics? Ta.

I've definately seen the chalkboard fabric at my local Spottie & they do stock vinyl although not sure if you will find "whiteboard" suitable stuff.

Thanks, sounds like I might need to take a trip over there some weekend (oh how awful!) She talks about the kind of vinyl needed so I'll go investigate and see what they have. Maybe a bigger fabric shop would have it if Spotlight doesn't carry it. Hmm... I have been looking for an excuse to go to some of the other fabric shops that I've seen advertised. Unfortunately most of them are in the City.

Its $35p/m but you use so little for a mat like that. I bought .5m and have made 2 identical mats (1 for ds 1 for swapping) and have enough left for about 4 more mats - or other projects. I am in half a mind to make a whole lot more for my friends and families kids or use it in other projects!

Yes, it was yours that inspired me, thanks for submitting it, Arnie! I found some instructions on this blog which I'll probably loosely use. Theoretically I could've figured it out myself but I'm a pattern first sort of a sewer, I'll wing additions/changes after I've made something once or twice or at least have a good idea around the concept. Thanks for posting your figures, that's really helpful. I might start with 0.25m which would easily get me 2 and see if DS1 is keen on one. He's 11 so it'd have to be cool, but he enjoys drawing and anything that would encourage him to write is a good idea.

I'm planning a spotty trip tomorrow anyway to buy fabric for Pumpkin's quilt, so I'll investigate chalk mat/vinyl options then.

I saw that one when I decided to google tutes AFTER i sewed mine, of course! I would have much preferred not to hurt my brain by working it out for myself.. and i thought that whiteboard side was a great idea for older kids (as mr 2.5 would love to draw on the walls with the markers lol)
