Has anyone made their own sewing machine extension table?

Has anyone made their own sewing machine extension table?

Postby Dunners » Thu Apr 12, 2012 12:54 pm

I have been trawling the internet to try to find one to fit my machine, and it's going to be spendy. So, I thought I'd see if I could get some plexiglass to make my own. I emailed a plexiglass company with a branch here in Chc (@psp.co.nz) and I was pleasantly surprised to get this response:

For this application you can use either 4.5mm or 6mm depending on how rigid you would like it to be. I would suggest 4.5mm will be fine, provided you have the feet as in the link you provided.

4.5mm @ 500 x 600 = $20 plus GST
6.0mm @ 500 x 600 = $25.47 plus GST.

In term of cutting the insert for it, if you have access to an Angle Grinder or fine tooth saw this will work. Alternatively you can repeatedly score the lines until you cut through, this process however could take a while.

Yay! \:D/

The link referred to is this one http://www.allbrands.com/products/abp03 ... e%20Images

I'm going to give it a go. Any ideas on what I use for the support feet & how to attach them? :-k

It's probably not worth me buying & sending on and there are a few branches around NZ for those of you further around the Country, but I could buy for those local if that's a help?

I guess it depends if you want them adjustable or not? You could countersick some screws through the top and screw on some dowels. i would go with the thicker one if you are going to attach them that way. Either that or you will have to glue something onto the bottom

You could get some plexiglass rods and just stick them to the plexiglass, I'm sure there are specific glues for that kind of thing. You could put screws in the bottom of the 'feet' for height adjustment.

Find out if the plexiglass people will cut the machine hole for you, it will give you a much smoother finish :D
