Sewing a leotard/ unitard... claire?

Sewing a leotard/ unitard... claire?

Postby growingclothie » Mon Apr 23, 2012 4:30 pm

Would love any advise, tips, or pattern recommendations for sewing a leotard/ unitard

Z is doing competitive gymnastics now, he goes to Hamilton once a week to train with their boys and does the rest of his training locally. It seems at this stage that he will be entering competitions under the local club rather than Hamilton and if that theory continues I've been told he can use any leotard we choose as he is the first boy from our club to enter competitive comps and there is no exsisting boys uniform. For recreational competitions our boys wear black singlet or t-shirt and black rugby shorts, recreational competition/ training uniform for girls is sleeveless top half/aqua bottom half black with tight gymnastics boyleg shorts, and girls competitive competitions uniform is a longsleeve sparkly aqua leotard with silver and black (assuming the new ones they have just ordered aren't too different to last year). The club jacket that he will wear between apparatus is white and black with aqua/ white/ black logo.

Boys gymnastics leotards are really hard to come by in NZ, most clubs get their uniforms specially made and pay heaps of $$$$ so I'm considering designing/ sewing it myself. I'm probably going to opt for a boyleg style unitard (which he will wear black shorts over) and the best option I can think of so far is to try drafting from a combination of the fitted singlet and bike shorts he wears for training under his shorts. I suck at drafting so am very open to better ideas. I currently considering trying for either of these top colour change options

aqua around arms/ black body (without arm binding as that scares me)

or aqua shoulders/ silver sides/ black body

Claire did I remember seeing a tutorial of yours somewhere???

Also interested in advise on where to get appropriate fabrics, the boys ones are more a matt nylon lycra as opposed to cotton lycra or shiny nylon lycra

I have an overlocker but not a coverstitch machine

Help!!! :gaah:

Not sure about the fabric where you are. Is it a stretch fabric? Spotlight has quite a large selection of that kind of dancewear type stuff.

I've made leotards with just an overlocker and all the edging was done with elastic and the 3 step zig zag. I got a leotard pattern from Burda which had leotard and leggings pattern, which I cut down for ballet shorts. Kwik Sew have a good easy and well fitting sports wear patterns. I've used the Jazz pants pattern which fits really well.

Yes they are a lycra, just like dance leotards, but for a boys one I want to avoid shiny lycra, and the cotton lycra I think would show sweat too easily and be more like a training leotard rather than a competition one. I don't think Hamilton spotlight has much range of lycra, I'll check again though. I've got some cotton lycra that I will trial on in different colours that he can use as a training leotard if it works

There's a few online places in nz that sell fabrics for dance outfits - I'm pretty sure that they would have matte stuff as well because the nude coloured part of dance outfits is a matte finish.

I know the type of lycra you mean. It's not around much.. mostly the super shiny nylon or cotton. There is some at kutwells but it doesn't have a huge amount of stretch. I have a heap of it in white you are welcome to if you want to try dying.
I've noticed that spotlight down here doesn't have much in the way of lycra at all at the moment (it's my sister's ballet school recital soon so have been hunting for all the dance fabrics LOL)..

I agree with Kaz .. kwik sew is your best bet. I have this one http://kwiksew.mccall.com/k2724-product ... lay&list=0 if you want to borrow it
Don't need a coverstitch. If you want it to look all flash just topstitch with a double needle :D

Option B of pattern #2912 is exactly what I need! I wonder if I can get the pattern in time, need to have his uniform well sorted before first competition in June, off to investigate the australian retailers to see if anyone can deliver to our holiday accommodation in Brisbane next week

Anyone know what the difference between lyrca and spandex other than chlorine resistance/ uv protection?

The matt nylon lycra and matt spandex the above website sells looks very similar... though I'm tempted by the aqua crocodile foil spandex for the shoulder contrast 8-[

Though Z would LOVE the camoflague print spandex!!!

that's cool - you should be able to get some good info and tips when you go in, and it's always nicer being able to look and feel fabrics before buying too.

when Riley did competitive gymnastics his leotard and shorts were made out of the same fabric and I can recommend that you use a darkish colour and the boys that had light ones became a little see through with the sweat. The leotard was shaped like a singlet and the top and quite wide in the crouch area. His shorts were mid thigh length and quite baggy with just an elastic waist. None of the boys wore a unitard or if they did they all had shorts over the top. They also wore a club tracksuit for the team walk on, in between apparatus and prize giving. If it will help I can pm you a pic of Riley is his gear
