What about using fibreglass rods? I'm not sure of the cost but it might be worth a call to a farm supplies place or even the manufacturer to find out?

This kind of thing. http://www.prepul.co.nz/agriculture.html

What about a local emporium? Ours has dowel, though I haven't looked closely enough to see what diameter....

I went to mitre10 yesterday and at $17 per dowel (28mm) Im thinking twice about it!
we could get away with smaller dowel? the 20mm was only $10 but still pricey considering you need about 5!

I'm going with 20mm I think and I signed up for a trade account so should be a couple of dollars less each. Still spendy though!

How did these teepees come along?

I'm about 80% finished on one for James (for his birthday on Saturday). I just need to sew the 6 panels together, I've had had to pack it away and get ready for work this afternoon darnit! I've taken hours to make it, I've bound each top & bottom edge beautifully if I may say so myself 8-[ I've sewn in ties to tie the door closed or open. It's been a bit of a mission as I've wanted to size it to fit cot innersprung mattress that we kept as the kids love playing with/sleeping on, so the panels are not all the same. Here's hoping my maths is right and it works (don't tell my students if I stuff this up  )

I've just bought 6x 1.8 m bamboo stakes ($1.60 each), if they don't last the distance I'll pay for the dowels, but the 1.8m whatever thickness I saw the other day were $5.40 each and don't feel that much sturdier as the bamboo stakes. I looked at PVC pipes as per another blog but that was upwards of $10 per metre and only 2 m long so there would be patching required etc.

Argh, must get ready for work. Shall hopefully be back with a photo in the next day or two...

Howz everyone going with their teepee's? How long has it taken (hours) and how much did you spend?

Trying to work out if I sew one myself or just buy a mocka one.

This looks cool. If anyone local wants bamboo our neighbours bamboo is getting really overgrown right now, and I'm about to cut a few pieces strategically here and there. It's invading our yard and taking more and more of our view. :twitch:

Oh, I've not added photos, I'll try to do that tomorrow. Bamboo stakes from Mitre10 cost me just under $10. I used fabric from stash - a few metres of calico & a pair of co-ordinating prints. It took me ages to make, maybe 10 hours, but I made James' tee pee a funny shape to fit our cot mattress for sleeping in there so it took a bit more tweaking to get the shape & size right. I also finished every seam beautifully with binding to add to the trimming and look nicer on the inside. James is stoked, so I'd certainly do it all over ;)
