Stretchy Castoff

I'm almost finished DS's Tama, and are wanting to make sure the cast off is a bit stretchy, I'm a bit hit and miss with cast offs, and some have almost no give .

I'm at the bottom and have done some rounds of garter stitch, is it best to cast off on a purl round or knit round? and to get it stretchy do you have to knit a bit looser?

Any hints or tips would be fantastic.

I tend to do a sewn cast off unless the pattern says otherwise

Another option is to use a needle that is a size up and make sure you don't pull the yarn tight as you are casting off.

I nearly always use a needle at least one size up, often for something knitted in 4mm I would use a 5 or 5.5mm to cast off with.

The sewn cast off worked well, but I have a Milo I'm nearly finished for me so might try with larger needles as it too ages with the needle.
