knitting a hat step by step instructions

Heya j-j. I just did this hat for both my 4yo boy and 16month girl and did the large for my 16month girl but have found with both of them that they seem a little short so if I was to do it again I'd be inclined to do it a couple of rows longer than suggested, but that's just me...oh hang on....that's for the earflap hat...you are prob talking about the original hat? Sorry...

I knitted a hat in the round from the cleckheatons book recently for my 4mo. I used the 6mo size, which was 86 stitches, increasing to 90 in the 4th row. (1st 3 rows were purled). It is slightly too big for him, his head is about 42cm.

The bigger sizing in the pattern for 9mo (48cm head) was CO 96 stitches, increase to 100.

This is probably a really stupid question, but could I use 4 ply wool with this pattern to hopefully get a hat that would be newborn size?
I've got 4 ply wool that i need to use as i am making a matching hat to go with a vest I've already knitted...?

Here it is - done in 4 ply on circulars - with no other changes...88 stitches and 4 mm needles, and looks good if i do say so myself. Looks like the perfect size for a newborn

Hi, I am totally new at knitting and this hat was my very first project, but this is what I did. Cara was only 3 months when I knitted this so I knitted a test bit (there is probably a correct name for it). I cast on 10 stitches then knitted for a few rows. I then measured how long this was which = 5.5 cm. I then divided her head measurement by 5.5 then x by 10 (number of stitches in my test bit) then just rounded it down to the nearest full number. So for the 56 cm head I work it out to be 101 stitches (56 divided by 5.5cm x 10 = 101.8 rounded down = 101) may be totally wrong as I know nothing about knitting, but it worked for me.

I'm sure Callum's godmother will have a far better way of working it out and she should really be the one to answer this for you.

You should do a guage (ie. knit approx a 20 rows x 20 st in stocking stitch) and measure how many stitches are in 10cms . . . then x by 5.6 (for a 56cm head).
