Snap service people... advice?

Snap service people... advice?

Postby ASewerIAmNot » Mon Oct 20, 2008 10:41 pm

I just purchased a snap press (and die set for size 20 snaps) from Green Beans (thanks, Sarah!) and I was thinking that since I'll be one of the only people in my immediate area who have one, I'd offer a snap service.

The catch? I don't have a clue how to go about it (other than what I've already done, which is to email GB and ask her to add me to her list of people offering a snap service). But do I charge for the snaps and postage? Do I charge for snaps only? If so, WHAT do I charge (if anything)? Do you expect to have them snapped within a certain time frame (what is the time frame)? Is there a "procedure" that any of you use for this?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've only done it a few times, honestly it's a bit of a hassle, and most people end up buying a snap press after seeing just how useful they are.
So far I've asked people to buy their own snaps, or they have handed me a few $$ to cover the ones they used, but I've never asked for $$ as I honestly don't know what a handful of snaps is worth, I've never had anyone borrow the press for major snapping, usually they just want to see it, try it, and then decide to get their own.

It's a HUGE hassle, I spent the better part of my Saturday putting snaps on nappies for a customer  .
NO way you could ever charge a per hour rate because then it would just be insane.

You also need to be sure you're 200% sure you know what you are doing, even being really careful it's still all too easy to make a mistake. You need to work out what would happen then.
I'd recommend getting people to buy their own snaps and getting them to come round and use your press at your house. You could charge a minimal per hour fee for that no trouble. (I can get about 50 snaps done in about 5 minutes with no interruptions so you get an idea, but I"ve been doing it for a while now ;))

I thought about it initially, but wouldn't until I was really confident snapping. I don't really have time to anyway.

Wow, I'm sending my nappies over to you to snap.

That's assuming there are no small people around to help with the job mind ;)

Our Dunedin snap press works like this: (this is a totally individual press purchased by Dunedin Nappy Network so it doesnt "belong" to anyone as such, I just look after it and handle $).
People can come to my place and use it for free. I am happy to show them how it works, so far everyone has done their own snapping (ie not dropped off nappies for me to do).
We bought a bulk lot of white snaps that we sell as 10c for a set of 4 (ie 2 caps, 1 stud, 1 socket ideally, but not always).
People can hire the press and take it to their house. There is a bond of $30, plus 50c per night or $2.50 for a week.

Thanks, everyone. I think I will do just that -- offer the snap press to people to come over and use here at my place. I just can't see myself lending it out and having it out of my sight when it's still so new to me. LOL But since I have one, and I know how hard it is to come across somebody who does have one in this area, (I only know one person and she's a very busy lady) I'd feel silly just keeping it all to myself.
