I'm just finishing a test knit for someone and have also just knitted another pattern where I subbed one 8 ply for another and needed an extra 50g of yarn to get the correct amount! These were both baby items too one sized 0-6m and the other 6-12m. It's always safest to work in meterage (or yardage) rather than weight because some yarns vary hugely, eg merino is lighter than 100% wool so you get a lot more in 100g etc etc.

Totally agree, I just weighed my size 4 milo and it only weighs 104grams. It was knitted with Cleckheaton Vintage Twist, obviously a very light weight yarn.
